Why Do Teeth Become Increasingly Yellow as We Get Older?
Posted on 12/15/2018 by Sean Saghatchi
Who is not jealous of young people with dazzling smiles that radiate health and carefree time in a person's life? If the statistics are any indication, Americans are obsessed with white teeth because they spend millions of dollars each year in their quest to improve the way their smiles look.
Why Do Teeth Turn Yellow?
When your enamel is healthy and free of cracks or chips, it will make your teeth look whiter. With wear and tear, enamel starts to thin as you age and the inner layer of your teeth, called the dentin, is more visible. The dentin is located directly below the enamel and is yellowish.
Other factors that make your teeth look yellow include the types of foods you eat, bad habits, and poor oral hygiene. For example, coffee, tea, wine, smoking, chewing tobacco, and plaque accumulation can cause your teeth to lose their whiteness. Brushing too hard can also wear the enamel off and cause it to become thinner.
Yellowish teeth aren't always an indication of a problem though. Some people have teeth that are less white than others due to genetics and certain illnesses, but society places great importance on having perfect teeth.
How to Effectively Whiten Yellow Teeth
If you are concerned about the way your smile looks to others because your teeth are yellow, we have several treatment options for you here at our office. The safest methods are the ones we do ourselves because you will be getting the teeth whitening agent in a controlled manner.
There are many choices available in the market, but some are more abrasive than others and can damage your teeth. You can also opt to use toothpaste that contains baking soda, a natural whitening material that is very effective and non-abrasive.
