Understanding the Enamel Loss Process

Posted on 8/25/2019 by Sean Saghatchi
Understanding the Enamel Loss ProcessThe hard, outer part of your tooth is what's known as enamel. Its job is to protect your tooth from decaying. Although this is the hardest mineral substance found within your body, the acids that are in your daily diet can still cause damage to it.

What Causes Enamel to Erode

The main cause of enamel erosion is your stomach's acid. Conditions like acid reflux, bulimia, and alcoholism can make this worse. This is because your teeth are exposed to stomach acid when you have any of these health issues. Frequent vomiting is especially “dangerous” for your tooth enamel.

Common Signs of Tooth Enamel Erosion

Unfortunately, it's not always obvious when your tooth enamel is eroding. However, there are some common signs that you can watch for. For instance, your teeth may start to look either yellow or really shiny. They may also become very sensitive to hot, cold, and sugary foods. Initially such sensitivity will be minor, but eventually it can feel quite extreme. Additionally, your teeth may start to feel rough around the edges. You may also notice some indentations on the surface of your teeth.

What to Do When You See Signs of Tooth Enamel Erosion

When you feel like the enamel on your teeth is starting to erode, there are some things you should do. Most of this has to do with using the right products. For instance, you'll want to make sure that your toothpaste and your mouthwash contain fluoride. There are other ingredients available to kill acid-causing bacteria, re-mineralize your tooth's enamel, and shield your teeth. These ingredients will also help you protect against cavities in the areas of your mouth that are difficult for you to reach.

While adding these ingredients is important, brushing and flossing regularly is vital. Twice a day for two minutes each time with a soft-bristled toothbrush is the minimum amount of effort you should be putting into taking care of your teeth. Of course, you also need to call our office and set up an appointment for us to help you take care of your teeth too.
