When Tooth Sensitivity Gets Bad Enough to Require Medication, We Can Help

Posted on 11/20/2018 by Sean Saghatchi
When Tooth Sensitivity Gets Bad Enough to Require Medication, We Can HelpHaving sensitive teeth is no fun. You can't enjoy that ice cream you love (occasionally), and even a cold drink can send a shooting pain right to the root of your tooth. Sensitive teeth can be caused by many reasons, and it's essential to diagnose the condition so that we can help you.

Why Do Some People Have Sensitive Teeth?

Teeth sensitivity can happen for many reasons, including tooth decay, an infected root canal, and receding gums. Poor oral hygiene habits or genetics can cause these conditions. When there is decay that exposed the root of the tooth, you will feel a shooting pain with hot or cold foods or even air temperature.

If you have teeth sensitivity due to any of these reasons, the problem can be solved by letting us take care of your condition. Both diseases are reversible when treated, and we can even fix receding gums before the situation becomes worse, and your teeth become loose.

Sometimes genetics play a role in tooth sensitivity.

How to Treat Tooth Sensitivity

Treating the underlying condition is the best approach to helping you with your tooth sensitivity. For example, once we complete a root canal, you will feel much better, and the sensitivity should go away shortly after the procedure.

Some of the following things can help you:

•  Using sensitive teeth toothpaste
•  Using a very soft-bristled toothbrush
•  Brushing gently
•  Utilizing a mouthguard at night
•  Avoid acidic foods and drinks
•  Rinse your mouth with water to balance acidic foods
•  Wait 20 minutes to brush after eating or drinking acid foods
•  Avoid over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments

Some of these suggestions can help you deal with sensitive teeth temporarily, but it's important to take care of the underlying reason for your discomfort. Please let us know if you suffer from sensitive teeth and we will decide the best treatment for you.
