There Are No Good Reasons for Loose Teeth in Adults
Posted on 10/15/2018 by Sean Saghatchi
When a child has a loose tooth, it's a reason for rejoicing and excitement because it means they are growing up. However, when an adult has a loose tooth, it is a reason for concern because it could indicate there is some other serious problem.
Your gums are designed to keep your teeth snugly in place. When bacteria start eating at your enamel cavities can damage the surface of the teeth and grow to affect the inside of it, if not treated.
Many times, gum disease will result in loose teeth and eventually tooth loss. When caught early, gum disease can be treated successfully.
Why Teeth Become Loose in Adults
One of the main reasons for loose teeth in adults is receding gums due to periodontal disease. When this happens, the teeth can appear more extended, and you may feel sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures because the enamel is weaker.
A weak enamel invites more bacteria from plaque to adhere to the tooth and eventually that bacteria will start to erode the structure of the tooth reaching the sensitive nerves and blood vessels located by the root. Gums will become swollen, and the inflammation will cause them to recede.
Pregnant women are at a higher risk of periodontal disease because of hormonal changes. This is probably one of the only times that we expect to see loose teeth in adults, but the condition usually reverses once the baby is born.
Periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in the United States, and we are committed to providing you with services that will keep your gums and teeth healthy for many years. With proper care at home and regular dental checkups, most people can experience excellent oral health which could also prevent the development of more severe conditions of their overall health.
